‘For me the attraction of Peninsula’s ITT programme was the fact you are actually living and breathing the school experience from day one! The framework that is in place at Penrice and the links to Plymouth University give you the support and guidance that you need and as long as you’re not afraid to roll your sleeves up and immerse yourself in school life then this is definitely the best way to experience all that the teaching profession has to offer. It’s the end of the first half term and it’s quite scary to see how much I have developed in such a short time, Peninsula give you the tools to succeed and the feedback to constantly improve. In school from day one - Teacher Training

The Peninsula SCITT programme offers a one year, full time, Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programme based within Cornish Schools. We offer training within both Primary and Secondary and work with Plymouth University to enable graduates to gain QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and their PGCE (Postgraduate certificate in education).

The programme is school based, supported by Professional Studies sessions led by Plymouth University tutors, most of which will take place at Penrice Academy in St Austell with an occasional day on campus at Plymouth University during the year. The theory side of the training programme is led by Penrice Academy and Primary phase partners and is run from within Penrice Academy, Carclaze C. P. School and other partner schools, so as learning of the theory can be coupled with the opportunity to observe teaching and learning within the classroom. A benefit of this Teacher Training programme being run by a teaching school is that members of staff can be bought in from across the consortium of schools to provide training in their specialist areas meaning that trainees get a broad insight into the approaches taken within a range of Schools and see examples of best practice.

Beyond the Teaching and Learning Induction stage of the programme trainees then start their Main School Placement (MSP) within one of our partner Schools in Cornwall. The Main School Placement takes place from October until June giving trainees a considerable amount of time working within a school to develop their teaching. There is also a Second School Placement (SSP) which takes place for half a term after Christmas to give trainees an experience of a contrasting school environment. On top of this a two week Enrichment School Experience is programmed towards the end of the year to provide an opportunity to spend time in a further educational setting such as a College, Primary School, Secondary School or other to suit the development and interests of the trainee.

Throughout all stages of the Peninsula SCITT programme trainees are supported by Hosts and Mentors within their placement schools as well as having a Peninsula SCITT Coach assigned to them for the duration of the programme.

 ‘After graduating from the University of Exeter it was clear that I wanted to pursue a career in teaching within the south-west. The Peninsula Teaching School provided this opportunity and its unique school based Initial Teacher Training programme combined placements within outstanding Cornish schools with support from leading educational professionals. The most valuable aspect of this programme, by far, is spending the majority of my time training within the classroom being supported by inspirational teachers. There is also a wide variety of support, from mentors in placement schools to coaches within the teaching school alliance, all of whom guide trainees to become outstanding teachers. I feel privileged to be undertaking my teacher training within Cornwall, after all, how many geography teachers can take their students for a lesson on the local beach?’
