Governance training will be run by Jackie Eason and is open to any governor interested in professional local governance training

Jackie Eason (Trainer): Brief Pen Portrait

I have a professional background in training, mentoring and quality assurance working with both British Cycling and the Department of Transport.

I have been involved in school governance since 2000; I am a National leader of Governance and in this role have supported many chairs and governing boards. In recent years I have been commissioned by the Local Authority to offer support in schools causing concern. I also work with The Learning Institute and CAST.

These opportunities have allowed me develop a broad range of knowledge and skills including

  • Undertaking reviews of governance
  • Undertaking reviews of schemes of delegation
  • Chair of a school during the journey from requires improvement to good
  • Interim Chair of a special measures school through to Academisation
  • Board member and founder member of a multi academy trust
  • Chair of a school whilst developing an entire new governing body
  • Chairing panels for grievance, disciplinary and complaints hearings
  • Appointment of a new head
  • Development of governance training courses
  • Supporting chairs of governors with a wide range of issues


Training will be delivered to groups of governors, where time will be given to interact with each other and share best practice.

Effective Governance – Wednesday 27th September, 4:00 – 6:00pm

This session is designed for both new and experienced governors and trustees. The session raises awareness of the roles and responsibilities of governance and how to ensure effective delivery. Delegates will leave the session with a clear understanding of how their board can increase their effectiveness.

The session will cover:

  • The roles and responsibilities of governance
  • The aspects of effective governance
  • Next steps for improvement


Chair’s Training –  Wednesday 15th November 4:00 – 6:00pm

The purpose of this session is for governing body chairs and prospective chairs to develop their understanding of leading governance.

The session will cover:

  • What makes an effective governing board
  • The chair’s role in ensuring effectiveness
  • Specific chairs responsibilities
- complaints and misconduct, building positive relationships and dealing with urgent matters
  • Leadership qualities
  • Governance making an impact
